It came down to the final moment of the race, and Peter Sagan emerged from the impressive field of sprinters as the winner of the San Diego Stage 1 during the Amgen Tour of California on Sunday, May 15.
Sagen, who rides for Tinkoff, was last year’s overall winner. This was his third victory of the season. Cannondale’s Wouter Wippert earned runner-up honors on the stage and Dylan Groenewegen of LottoNL – Jumbo took third at the end of the 105 mile stage in and around San Diego.
The annual ride from Southern California to Northern California will come into South Lake Tahoe Thursday at the end of Stage 5. The women race the same day around the lake after starting at Heavenly's Base Lodge. Both the men and women will end up at the ski resort later in the day Thursday.
