Editorial: Vote "YES" on Measure L

Measure L is the Library Special Tax on the ballot this year. Twenty years ago the South Lake Tahoe voters passed a library tax where those who owned parcels in the area would be charged $20/parcel per year for the next 20 years to fund the library.

Well, that time period is up so the tax is on the ballot once again. This is not a new tax, just a request for taxpayers to continue paying the same.

To me, it's a "no brainer." The library is valuable part of our community with so much more offered than books. They host speakers, authors, have kid's activities, free use of public computers. ebooks and audio books as well as a very good selection of books and magazines. If they don't have what you want, they'll get it from another branch within a day or two if available.

What is different about Measure L from so many other county measures and initiatives is that this is just for South Lake Tahoe. The money goes nowhere else!

On a personal note, I use the library often. I once paid for all of my books, and being a big reader this was costly. On an average it would only take me a few days to read a book, and multiply this by 30-50 books a year I could probably fund a small country. The library is a great place to grab that book you've been waiting for. My mom was a librarian in the pre-computer age, so I grew up hanging out doing homework in a library with its vast resources.

A yes vote on Measure L is the cost of about four large lattes or two movies at the theater.

Vote "YES" on Measure L to keep this valuable South Lake Tahoe resource open 5 days a week with stocked shelves and programs for all ages.
