California Primary on Tues., June 5

The California primary is on Tuesday, June 5, and a lot of decisions are facing voters in South Lake Tahoe both at the county and district level, as well as at the state level.

California changed their primary system ten years ago for the top offices and now it is the two candidates with the most votes on Tuesday that will head to the November elections, no matter which party they belong to. Prior to this system it would be the top democrat and top republican that would face off.

With Governor Jerry Brown unable to run for reelection, there are a slew of candidates running for his spot. State Treasurer John Chiang (D), Businessman John Cox (R), former California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin (D), Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom (D) and former Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa (D) are the top contenders out of the list of 27.

Lieutenant Governor: Leading candidates are Democrats Sen. Ed Hernandez, Eleni Kounalakis, Jeff Bleich and Republican Cole Harris.

Secretary of State: Leading candidates are incumbent Alex Padilla (D), Ruben Major (D), Mark Meuser (R), Raul Rodgriguz, Jr. (R).

Attorney General: Incumbent Xavier Becerra, Former El Dorado County Judge Stephen Bailey, Dave Jones and Eric Early.

U.S. Senate: Incumbent Dianne Feinstein (D), Kevin de León (D), James P. Bradley (R), Paul A. Taylor (R). Nine other Republican candidates are splitting 13 percent of likely voters, and nine additional Democrats are splitting 6 percent.

u.s. House of Representatives: Incumbent Tom McClintock (R) and two Democrats, Jessica Morse and Regina Bateson are the top three in the race.

State Assembly: Incumbent Frank Bigelow (R), Carla Neal (D).

El Dorado County:
Assessor Karl Weiland is unchallenged
Auditor-Controller: Incumbent Joe Harn and challenger Mike Owen
District Attorney: Incumbent Vern Pierson and challenger Patricia Kelliher
Recorder-Clerk: Todd White, Janelle Horne, Dan Dellinger
Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator: John A D’Agostini (Incumbent) is unchallenged
Superintendent of Schools: Edward Manansala (Incumbent) in unchallenged
Treasurer – Tax Collector: Anne Billingsley, Karen Coleman
Surveyor" Philip Mosbacher is unchallenged

County Supervisor District 5:
Incumbent Sue Novasel and challengers Kenny Curtzwiler, Norma Santiago, Jeffrey Spencer

Propositions

Proposition 68 - Authorizes Bonds Funding Parks, Natural Resources Protection, Climate Adaptation, Water Quality and Supply, and Flood Protection.

Proposition 69 - Requires That Certain New Transportation Revenues Be Used for Transportation Purposes. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.

Proposition 70 - Requires Legislative Supermajority Vote Approving Use of Cap-And-Trade Reserve Fund. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.

Proposition 71 - Sets Effective Date for Ballot Measures. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.

Proposition 72 - Permits Legislature to Exclude Newly Constructed Rain-Capture Systems From Property-Tax Reassessment Requirement. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.
