A second fireworks show added in the South Shore after Lights on the Lake canceled

Event Date:
July 4, 2021 - 9:20pm

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - A group of South Shore businesses, residents, and groups have come together to put on a Fourth of July fireworks show of their own after the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority canceled its Lights on the Lake due to crowd and safety concerns.

The Shops at Heavenly Village and the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association have joined others and come together to raise money to produce a "clean, smaller, fireworks display" from the top of the Michael Laub building at Stateline, Nevada in the casino corridor (where CVS is located).

“On behalf of the Michael Laub Building, we are honored to host this year's Fourth of July celebration with a firework display from our rooftop," said Tamara Laub and Jordan Laub Esq., owners. "We welcome the opportunity to celebrate our national Independence Day, and to continue a historic Lake Tahoe tradition that has been dear to the hearts of the Laub family, and to that of Tahoe locals, and tourists alike. In dedication to my late father, Michael Laub, who would be proud to have joined us in this celebration."

The event came to be after 20-year-old Gardnerville, Nevada resident Jonathan Ruppel started a GoFundMe page after news broke of Lights on the Lake was canceled. He reached out to management of The Shops at Heavenly Village to get the show to go on. So far, $2,250 of a $35,000 goal on that page has been raised.

“Fireworks on the 4th of July is a family tradition with my family," said Ruppel. "I have been watching them since before I could walk. To keep the fireworks in Tahoe is something worth fighting for. All money raised through my Go-Fund-Me will be put into making the producing the best show possible for families like mine."

The show will start at approximately 9:20 p.m. in the Stateline corridor on July 4. Live music, DJ’s and even an appearance from The Killer Dueling Pianos will bring in the celebratory show, according to local promoter and producer, Dreu Murin. He said more details will be released soon. Murin also said they are working with Tahoe Douglas Fire and Tahoe Douglas Sheriff's departments to ensure all details are in order and all safety precautions are taken for the event.

"We understand the challenges this year with executing our normal, world-renowned Lights on the Lake fireworks show, but believe that a smaller, safe fireworks experience this year at Stateline, Nevada will be to the benefit of our visiting guests and locals as we celebrate our country’s independence," said the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Associaton in a statement. " We look forward to our normal famous on-lake show returning on July 4, 2022."

Previously, the Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe announced it will hold the Keep Tahoe Red, White and Blue show at their Guitar Plaza from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on July 3. For more information on tickets, see here.
