California residents yesterday voted to pass Proposition 68, approving a $4 billion investment to protect the state’s unique natural resources and provide protections from the growing threat of climate change.
Darcie Goodman Collins, PhD, the executive director for the League to Save Lake Tahoe, represented the League on the statewide Yes on 68 committee. The following is a statement by Dr. Collins:
“California voters have spoken, and they have once again shown their commitment to protecting important natural resources like Lake Tahoe. By passing Prop 68, Californians have approved direct investments in environmental restoration at Lake Tahoe and the surrounding region.
Prop. 68 provides $27 million to the California Tahoe Conservancy and $30 million to the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. Projects funded by Prop. 68 will restore the ecological functions of wetlands and meadows that had been destroyed by 20th century development, and which had acted as natural pollution filters for Lake Tahoe. These projects will provide Lake Tahoe with greatly improved resiliency to the destructive impacts climate change poses to the Lake’s delicate ecology. We could not be more grateful to everyone who voted in support of Prop 68.”
