George Whittell Chautauqua performance at Nevada State Museum

Event Date:
June 15, 2023 - 6:30pm

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City continues its Francis Humphrey lecture series with a Chautauqua performance by local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff on Thursday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m.

The Woodruffs re-enact the characters of George and Elia Whittell, one of the wealthiest couples on the West Coast during the 1920s through 1950s. They kept an African Lion for a pet, owned over 25 miles of Lake Tahoe waterfront, built one of the most beautiful estates on Lake Tahoe’s shore, hosted high-stakes poker games with the rich and famous, and unintentionally conserved a large portion of Lake Tahoe lands for the public to enjoy today.

This lecture will be presented in person and on Zoom. Admission is $10 for adults; museum members, and children aged 17 and under are free.
