Day-use reservations planned for Sand Harbor State Park

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Division of State Parks has announced they will roll out a pilot day-use reservation parking system at Sand Harbor State Park in mid-August before moving to a permanent system in 2025.

This new system aims to reduce traffic congestion on Highway 28, improve trip planning, and alleviate overcrowding at this beloved Lake Tahoe destination in Incline Village.

Since its inception in 2023, reservenevada.com has transformed trip planning across Nevada's state parks, offering a centralized platform for camping reservations. Sand Harbor State Park will be the second to implement day-use reservations. From August 17 through October 13, 2024, reservations will be required on weekends and holidays. This initial trial period will help staff and visitors adjust to the new procedures, with full implementation set for April 2025.

People can start making reservations on July 1.

To accommodate spontaneous visits, entry after 10:30 a.m. will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to park capacity. Reservations made before the day of arrival are subject to a non-refundable $5 reservation fee; however, reservation fees for same-day bookings are waived.

This new system is an attempt by Nevada State Parks to reduce congestion on SR28 and alleviate overcrowding. Many mornings in the summer the line of cars wanting to get into Sand Harbor starts at dawn, hours before the park opens. More than one million visitors visit the Sand Harbor State Park annually, making it the most visited park in the state parks system.

More details on the reservations will be released prior to the August implementation.
