Open burning banned around Lake Tahoe through summer

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Fire restrictions are now in place around the Lake Tahoe Basin and all solid fuel recreational and cooking fires and open burning are banned for the rest of the summer season. Solid fuel includes charcoal and wood. This also applies to parks and beach charcoal grilling areas, although federal and state land campfire restrictions may differ in the areas they operate.

Campground by the Lake in South Lake Tahoe, which is hosted, is currently allowing charcoal BBQs in the provided grills, and campers can have fire in the provided rings. These rules are subject to change.

On June 10, CALFIRE AEU Unit suspended burn permits for the season, and on Monday, June 17, 2024, CALFIRE NEU followed suit, resulting in the full suspension of residential burn permits in the Tahoe Basin. These two actions triggered local jurisdictions around Lake Tahoe to activate their own restrictions, and it did.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, Lake Valley Fire Protection District, Meeks Bay and North Tahoe Fire Districts, and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District have all started local fire restrictions.

Only Natural Gas (NG) or Propane (LPG) outdoor firepits and barbecues, and pellet grills/smokers are allowed except during Red Flag/critical fire weather conditions. All of these appliances must be utilized following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Open-flame devices such as tiki torches and all fireworks, including sparklers and firecrackers are also banned.

For reports of hazardous/illegal campfires, people should call 9-1-1, and illegal fireworks activity should be reported to local law enforcement.

All outside fires, even on approved equipment, are banned during Red Flag/critical fire weather conditions. Follow weather reports when wind is present.
