Public meeting on Bijou Park Creek Watershed Restoration Project

Event Date:
June 24, 2020 - 2:00pm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a public presentation from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24 on the Bijou Park Creek Watershed Restoration Project.

The project is three phases, the first beginning with the removal of the Knight's Inn and addressing flooding issues in that area. The objectives of the complete project are to improve stormwater quality, decrease flooding, restore the Bijou Park Creek SEZ (stream environmental zone), and to install a series of stormwater quality and flood control improvements.

There are 11 proposed improvements to complete the project that are under consideration, but not all designs are likely to be carried forward for development. Most of the proposed improvements would be developed on lands owned by the City of South Lake Tahoe, CA Tahoe Conservancy, and US Forest Service

Phase 1 was the City's purchase of the Knight's Inn for implementation of flood zone projects, and the selling of some of the property that is currently home to Whole Foods and other businesses.

Phase 2 was the awarding of almost $500,000 to the City from State water funds to begin planning on watershed scale planning on 109 acres of public land.

Phase 3 will be the implementation of the plans with further stream environment zone restoration and floodplain rehabilitation.

The meeting Wednesday is a virtual workshop to explain the problems and possible solutions and to get public comments on the project design and environmental issues. It will not be a question and answer meeting.
