Cycling races to cause delays on Lake Tahoe area highways

Sections of State Highways 49, 70, 89 and 267 in the Sierra will be utilized during USA Cycling Amateur National Championship on Wednesday, June 24, and motorists are advised to expect delays throughout the day.

There will be seven races for the various age groups starting at 7:30 a.m. and concluding at about 8 p.m.

On the shortest course, 70 km, riders will start in the town of Loyalton and finish at Northstar-at-Tahoe. The longer courses will start and finish at Northstar and race along Highway 89 into Sierra County, loop around and then head back on Highway 89 toward Truckee onto 267. Delays could be up to one hour for motorists traveling Highway 89 between Truckee and Sierraville.

Electronic message boards have been placed along the routes advising motorists of the delays. The California Highway Patrol will provide traffic control during the races, which will include rolling closures of intersections as cyclists come through.
