Volunteers needed to assist the public in the Lake Tahoe backcountry

The USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is forming a new volunteer team to provide a “uniform presence” in Lake Tahoe areas where they do not have staff available to be in the field or on the many trails.

A formation meeting for is being held for all potential volunteers on Friday, June 28 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at LTBMU Supervisor Office located at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe.

The highest priority area for volunteers this summer is in Meiss Country, Armstrong Pass, Freel Peak, and Star Lake areas. The USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Volunteer Team will also be visiting other areas such as the Mt. Rose Wilderness as needed.

This duty will be “on the trails” so volunteers will be hiking, biking, and on horseback (you provide the method) to assist the public in the backcountry. They will also be “caring for the land” and reporting conditions to the USFS.

This formation meeting will include a round-table discussion of the needs, the priorities, how the team will operate, interfacing with other “partner organizations” like the TRT and PCT and other subjects.

A new official patch designed and produced by Tom Bishop has been approved by the USFS. They will look great on both hats and shirts.
