229 tons of debris collected during annual Community Clean-Up Day in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Community Clean-Up Day, better known as $5.00 dump day, continues to be an enormously popular event. Now in its 36th year, the annual event drew 666 cars to go through the line this year, and the Clean Tahoe field crew completed 41 curbside pick-ups for seniors and disabled residents, with 458,000 pounds of debris collected in total.

A large amount of that debris was recycled with 74 mattresses, 61,000 pounds of metal, and 12,275 pounds of electronic waste kept out of the landfill.

Residents who brought in a refrigerator or freezer saw the biggest savings. They were free this year and many took advantage of the $63 savings. The Pay It Forward Foundation helped to cover the cost of the 125 refrigerators that were collected.

It’s always an interesting day watching the vehicles come through. This year a Tesla truck, a golf cart, and several vintage vehicles took advantage of the deal. Of course, the trucks piled high with furniture have become a common sight.

The Clean Tahoe Program would like to thank everyone who made this another successful day. The hard-working crew at South Tahoe Refuse kept the lines moving with the help of members of the California Conservation Corps. The Kiwanis kept everyone fed with grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and several of the Clean Tahoe board members volunteered their time collecting the $5 fee. Iron Mountain provided the truck for shredding and Bye Bye Mattress hauled all the mattresses away.

This event would not be possible without the generous donations of the Vail Epic Promise Grant and The Pay It Forward Foundation. A special thank you also goes to Michael Phillips of Realty World for his generous donation. Lastly, thank you to the community for supporting The Clean Tahoe Program on Dump Day and throughout the year.
