465 Tahoe kids participating in Lift Literature Summer Reading Challenge

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The inaugural Lift Literature Summer Reading Challenge is underway with 465 Tahoe kids signed up to reading as many minutes as possible this summer.

• 168 Elementary/Preschool students
• 150 Middle School students

• 27 High School students
• 120 students attending the Boys & Girls Club Summer Program

This school year set many students behind in reading, so Lift Literature hopes this challenge will help families prioritize reading at home.

Reading at home can have a huge impact on students’ long term success. Starting in kindergarten, if a student reads 20 minutes a day at home, they will read/hear 1.8 million words per year.  They will have read for 851 hours by 6th grade and on standardized tests, they will likely score better than 90 percent of their peers.

“We’re hoping that families use the Summer Reading Challenge as an opportunity to create a lifelong love of reading," said Lift Literature Founder Melissa Uppendahl. "Summertime and reading should go hand in hand. Kids living here have the unique opportunity to dive into a book while enjoying the majesty of Tahoe - we want kids to know that reading is not only beneficial but it can connect you with loved ones, nature, and can truly be a life changing experience.”

Students who joined the challenge will receive an ice cream from Aloha Ice cream after reading 300 minutes. Grand prize winners in each grade category have a chance to win tickets for four to see the San Francisco Giants.

Would you like to support this effort? Lift Literature would like to raise an additional $1,000 to give away as many prizes as possible to young readers. Please donate here: https://www.liftliterature.com/donate.
