Kayaker dies in water offshore of South Lake Tahoe

1:30 p.m. 7/20/16 update: The man who died while kayaking in Lake Tahoe on Tuesday has been identified as 43-year-old Paul Anthony Aguirre of Rio Linda, Calif. Aguirre was in South Lake Tahoe with his family, his fiancée, and his fiancée's family.

Aguirre had been paddling in a privately owned kayak in the area of El Dorado Beach when family members lost sight of him and a call went out for help at 4:49 p.m.

The victim was located at the water’s surface, approximately 300 yards off of the shoreline of El Dorado Beach, where the depth was approximately 10 feet.

The initial investigation indicates the likelihood that the kayak capsized in the 13-15 mph sustained winds on Lake Tahoe. There was an estimated one foot chop wave presence all around the area yesterday afternoon. The water temperature in this area was 69 degrees Fahrenheit.

The cause of death is still under investigation by the El Dorado County Medical Examiner but it is suspected to be drowning.

A man died in the cold and choppy waters off the South Lake Tahoe shore Tuesday afternoon.

The family of the victim has been waiting for him at El Dorado Beach. When he didn't show up they started searching and found his floating kayak without him inside.

South Lake Tahoe Police personnel, including the SLTPD Marine 1 boat, responded to the call of the missing boater. Two officers were given boats by the Timber Cove Marina to use in the search as well as a jet ski. SLTPD Detective Jake Herminghaus jumped in full uniform onto the jet ski and rushed out to look for the missing man.

During the search, an employee from the marina located the unresponsive man in the water away from the pier where it gets deeper and colder. He performed CPR immediately and during the trip to the shore. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue met them on the beach where the victim was pronounced deceased.

The victim's age and hometown are unknown at this time. This is a developing store and more details should be made available soon.
