Another fire near Yosemite: Oak Fire quickly spreading near town of Mariposa

7/23 UPDATE: The very active Oak Fire has now burned 6,555 acres. Fire activity is extreme with frequent runs, spot fires, and group torching. Emergency personnel are working to safely evacuate people and are actively engaged in protecting structures. Explosive fire behavior is challenging for firefighters.

MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. - At 2 p.m. on Friday, July 22, a fire was spotted near the town of Midpines, north of Mariposa on Hwy 140 and Carstens Rd. It quickly spread and was last measured at 1,600 acres on CalFIRE's website, though fire mapping is reported at 4,350 acres.

The Washburn Fire to the east of the Oak Fire started 14 days ago and is now 4,856 acres in size and there is a containment line around 79 percent of the fire.

To the southwest of the Oak Fire is the smaller Aqua Fire which is 95 percent contained, 421 acres in size.
