High school sports news - NIAA moves football and soccer to spring

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) has announced their high school sports schedule for members in their area, including South Tahoe and Truckee High Schools.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of school reopening schedules, traditional fall sports have moved to Spring 2021. Adjustments to the schedules were voted on by the NIAA Legislative Commission which is comprised of the superintendents of each school in the league.

The new schedule (all have six competitive weeks) for NIAA sanctioned sports:

Winter Season Sports
Practice begins Saturday, January 2, 2021
First contest may be held Friday, January 15, 2021
Last contest Saturday, February 20, 2021

Fall Season Sports
Practice begins Saturday, February 13, 2021 - football
Practice begins Saturday, February 20, 2021 - all sports but football
First contest may be held Friday, March 5, 2021
Last contest Saturday, April 10, 2021

Spring Season Sports
Practice begins Saturday, April 3, 2020
First contest may be held Friday, April 16, 2021
Last contest Saturday, May 22, 2021

Out of season regulations which are traditionally in place during the summer will be in place through January 1, 2021. All member schools have the option of not participating with the above schedules for the 2020-21 school year.

At this time, NIAA says they anticipate no state tournaments and playoffs, if held, would be held during the six competitive weeks.

The holding of practices and competitions are still subject to health directives and restrictions, and mandates from local school districts.
