Unhealthy air in South Lake Tahoe as Oak Fire grows to14,281 acres

The Oak Fire burning in Mariposa County has now consumed 14,281 acres in less than 48 hours.

The fire remained active through the night moving toward the communities of Jerseydale, Darrah, and Bootjack. Poor humidity recovery was observed overnight. On Sunday the weather is expected to remain hot with minimum humidity between 5 and 10 percent, which will hamper firefighting efforts. High tree mortality and dense fuels are throughout the fire area.

Fire evacuation and advisories remain in effect. Damage inspection teams are beginning their assessment of the areas affected by the fire.

Agencies involved in the fire are holding a community meeting in the Mariposa County High School gymnasium at 7 p.m.

Even though about 100 miles away, smoke from the fire spread and filled the Lake Tahoe Basin overnight, bringing with it poor air quality. As long as the fire remains active and the west winds continue, expect smoke to continue affecting Lake Tahoe, the Carson Valley and Reno area. The air quality is currently in the "unhealthy" range in South Lake Tahoe. If recreating outdoors, monitor the smoke situation.
