Alpine County experiencing debris flows, road closures due to heavy rain in area

August 4 UPDATE: Due to large-scale rain events in Eastern Alpine County, the Alpine County Unified Command was notified by the California Department of Transportation that Highway 89 will be closed to all traffic from Turtle Rock Park to Markleeville until further notice. Access to Markleeville will be through Monitor Pass for residents. At this time, the County is asking all visitors to avoid the area.
Alpine County Unified Command is prepositioning public safety assets in Markleeville in anticipation of additional rain events and potential flooding.
Sand and sandbags are located at Fire Station 92 in Markleeville for resident access at 860 Hot Springs Rd, Markleeville, CA 96120.

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Due to large-scale rain events in Eastern Alpine County, the Alpine County Unified Command recommends residents remain vigilant and prepare for large-scale flash flooding and debris flows in the Markleeville, Markleevillage, Highway 89 Corridor to Wolf Creek, Pleasant Valley, and areas adjacent to these locations.
Highways are currently closed in the area. Highway 89 will be closed to all traffic from Turtle Rock Park to Markleeville until further notice. Access to Markleeville will be through Monitor Pass for residents only.
For current road conditions, visit https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/. Caltrans reported a vehicle was starting to get swept away in flood waters at SR89/SR4 at 4 p.m.
County officials warn this situation could continue through Friday when more rain is expected. They are also asking all visitors to avoid the area.
