November ballot filling up with candidates as deadline draws near

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The November 5 election is just over 90 days away, and candidates have started to file the necessary paperwork for several local elected positions open this year.

The deadline to file is August 9, 2024. If an incumbent does not file for reelection, the filing period will be extended to August 14 for that position only.

As of Friday, August 2, the following people have completed the needed paperwork to run for office:

County Board of Education Trustee Area 5 - appointed incumbent Kathy Jensen is running.

Lake Tahoe Community College District Trustee Area 3 Governing Board Member - Incumbent Dr. Karen Borges has filed.

Lake Tahoe Community College District Trustee Area 4 Governing Board Member - Incumbent Nancy Dalton has filed.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Trustee Area 4 - Incumbent Valerie Mansfield has filed.

City Of South Lake Tahoe City Council Member - Keith Roberts has filed.

Fallen Leaf Lake Community Services District Director - Woodson Martin, Karen Sipprell, and Katie Gray have filed.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District Director - Incumbent John Rice and Appointed Incumbent Tim Cain have filed.

Meeks Bay Fire Protection District Director - Incumbents Louis Fielding and Edward Miller have filed.

South Tahoe Public Utility District Director - Former Director Christopher J Cefalu, Incumbent Kelly M Sheehan, Joel Henderson, and Seth Dallob have filed.

Tahoe Paradise Recreation and Parks District Director, unexpired short-term - Patrick Maher has filed.

All positions to be voted on in November:

Lake Tahoe Unified School District - The terms of trustees Valerie Mansfield (area 4), Bonnie Turnbull (area 2), and Larry Reilly (area 1) are expiring. Those interested in running need to contact Superintendent Todd Cutler at (530) 541-2850.

Lake Tahoe Community College - Terms of Nancy Dalton (area 4), and Dr. Karen Borges (area 3) are expiring.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District - Three terms are expiring, those held by John Rice, Leona Allen, and Tim Cain.
Fallen Leaf Lake Community Services District - Three of the five director positions will be up for election.

Candidate filing documents and information about running for office can be found at www.eldoradocounty.ca.gov/Elections. Paperwork must be submitted in person. Candidates can use the online link to schedule an appointment to submit their paperwork.

All original nomination documents must be received at the Shingles Springs with original signatures by 5 p.m. on August 9 to be a qualified candidate for this election; the postmark date does not count. The filing for each office will be updated daily on the Elections website. The Elections Department will update its website each evening listing who has filed for each office.
