President Obama headed to South Lake Tahoe

The annual Lake Tahoe Summit has welcomed Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Governors, Senators and other dignitaries from the world of environmental protection, and 2016 will be no different.

Today, the White House announced that President Barack Obama will head to South Lake Tahoe on Aug. 31 to speak about his commitment to protecting the environment and addressing climate change at the summit which will be held at Harvey's Outdoor Arena this year.

White House spokesman Eric Schultz says Obama will talk about how the United States can ensure that national treasures like Lake Tahoe can be protected for future generations.

This is the 20th year the annual summit will be held in South Lake Tahoe. Annually people have met on the shores to discuss how they will restore and sustain our precious lake, and to keep its crystal waters blue. Senator Harry Reid is hosting the event which will be his last one as he leaves office.

President Bill Clinton held the first summit as he ordered federal agencies to coordinate to protect the lake and surrounding region. Clarity in the lake dropped over four feet in 2015, and protection is needed as years of drought affect the lake's clarity.

Tickets to the 2:00 p.m. event are being sold on Ticketmaster and on Stubhub. The band, the Killers, will also be featured during the summit. The rock band formed in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2001, and is featured on the state's tourism promotions.

Tentative agenda includes an hour of speakers starting at 2:00 p.m, followed by an hour of the Killers. The total event should last approximately one hour.
