Special City Council meeting to address impacts to South Lake Tahoe and possible fines

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An emergency meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council has been called to discuss the impacts of tourism during the pandemic on the community and steps they can take to mitigate the problems associated with the increase of visitors.

The meeting will be held virtually at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18.

Mayor Jason Collin called the special meeting to discuss the possibility of stepped-up enforcement of county health orders, lodging capacity limits, usages of City parks and beaches and the environmental impacts the visitation has had on the community.

Collin said community partners will be part of the meeting including South Tahoe Refuse, the US Forest Service, and El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel.

South Lake Tahoe has gone from a shut-down town with nothing open to a destination trying to cope with the extra people visiting during the pandemic. Businesses at one time were concerned with how to keep their doors open to facing too many coming in through those doors.

Council will discuss possible fines for violations of all public health orders.

"There is a concern of COVID impacts on the community and a growing amount of trash," said Collin.

Some of that extra trash is coming from forced take-out and no in-house dining and people are being moved into areas they don't normally go due to indoor capacities down, or non-existent.
