Grand Opening of Humane Society's Thrifty Tails Boutique

Event Date:
August 19, 2023 - 10:00am

TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is hosting the much-anticipated grand opening of their new Thrift Store, Thrifty Tails Boutique, this Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. HSTT is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoption, community spay/neuter, and humane education programs in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

After years of searching for an adequately sized, high-visibility/high-traffic, walk-in retail space in Truckee, HSTT is finally set to open their store located at 12047 Donner Pass Rd., Suite A3 in Truckee, where Sears had been located for many years.

With abundant parking, neighboring businesses with steady daily traffic, auxiliary space for sorting and storing donations, fitting rooms, and an office, the former Sears location has become the ideal space for the new HSTT hybrid boutique, which will also operate as a hub for an online store.

“This isn’t your ordinary thrift store. In true HSTT fashion, and after much research, we have brought together a unique thrift experience for our community featuring high-quality, boutique-style items with ready-to-wear options as well,” says HSTT CEO Stephanie Nistler. “It’s been years in the making, and now this dream is becoming a reality.”

Sales from the thrift boutique will support all of HSTT’s vital programs assisting people and pets in the greater Lake Tahoe area. Net proceeds from the thrift boutique will go directly toward rescue and the rehoming of at-risk pets, as well as funding critical programs such as their Community Spay/Neuter program, the Community Pet Pantry, Community Pet Financial Assistance program, Humane Education, and Pet Assisted Therapy programs.

Volunteer opportunities

HSTT is looking for more volunteers to help run their store. If you are interested in volunteering at Thrifty Tails Boutique, please contact Erin Ellis, Community Engagement Director for HSTT at erin@hstt.org.

They hope you’ll donate items for the cause

While they appreciate the intention of all donations, due to space constraints, sellability, and legal reasons, HSTT cannot accept everything, so please be sure to check their lists of acceptable and unacceptable items. Donations are accepted by appointment Tuesday – Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and without an appointment every Saturday from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. To schedule a donation, visit www.hstt.org/thrift.

Here are some tips to make the most of your donation

Schedule a donation appointment to help us expedite the process and ensure to only bring in items we can accept for resale.

Consider Condition: Gently used items are always appreciated. Worn-in shoes, torn, frayed, or faded clothing will most likely be disposed of at their expense, so please don’t take in worn-out items.

Pre-Wash Please: They don’t have the resources to launder items, so please ensure your clothing donations are clean! Household items should be clean and undamaged too. Things that are not in usable condition are not sellable.

Keep it Organized: Putting like items together can expedite the donation process. Please take clothes off hangers and bag or box them separately from household items.

Wrap it Up: They would hate for any fragile items to be damaged before they can find their new owner! Please wrap breakables appropriately.

Consider What It’s Worth: HSTT will provide a general in-kind donation receipt; however, they can’t advise an amount. Consult your tax advisor for details.
