South Lake Tahoe youth invited to fly the skies during Young Eagles Rally

Event Date:
September 23, 2017 - 8:00am

Kids will be able to experience South Lake Tahoe from the air during the 25th annual Young Eagles Rally at the Lake Tahoe Airport on September 23, 2017 starting at 8:00 a.m.

The Truckee Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will be hosting the event which provides free airplane rides to youth ages 8 to 17 years old.
Volunteer pilots introduce kids to aviation by giving them the free airplane rides, over 40,000 nationwide. Since EAA started in Truckee and South Lake Tahoe, 3400 youth have been able to get into the air.

“The pilots and ground volunteers enjoyed the small town air show atmosphere, and also noticed how appreciative kids and parents were for our doing the flights,” said Tom Meadows, EAA Young Eagles Coordinator.

The program was started in 1992 with the goal of introducing a million youths to aviation with a free airplane ride by the Wright brothers' flight centennial, December 17, 2003. They’ve exceeded their national goal and continued the program, having flown over 2 million Young Eagles worldwide since 1992.

Following the flight, each young person receives a certificate making them an official Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display at the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, WI. The Logbook is also accessible at youngeagles.org.

In addition to the certificate, the new Young Eagle will be given their own logbook with an access code for a free EAA Student membership and free access to the online Flight Training course offered by Sporty’s Pilot Shop, as well as several other programs.
