Why I'm running for STPUD Board of Directors

This is your District, and it’s your money. It needs to run like a business. My background is in business. I opened Happy Steak Restaurant here in 1975, at age 21, owned it for 16 years, and in Carson City for 10 years. I’m currently the Chamber CEO. I have a BA in business, I’m a graduate of the Institute for Organization Management, former Boys & Girls Club CEO, former School Board member, and past STPUD Board President. I also managed six lodging properties.

As a STPUD Director, I helped keep rates lowest in the Basin and voted for the infrastructure needed for clean drinking water, and fire safety. We installed over 100 fire hydrants in neighborhoods improving fire suppression. We cut sewer connection fees by 50 percent. We made the district one of only five utilities in the world that are 100 percent recycled including generating electricity, solar, biotechniques, and even raising alfalfa.

I’ve been independent and stood firm against special interests. I’m for finding ways to raise money that don’t involve rate increases. I pushed for using the downhill flow of wastewater to generate even more electricity that is sold back to Liberty power company. All can be accomplished when the downhill C-line pipe is ready to be replaced. The new pipe can be converted into a reservoir that is the pipe itself. Cogeneration can and should be done. The district is now 100 percent recycled. We even grow and sell alfalfa! I’m also for finding more grants, and state and federal assistance funds to help pay for needed projects. I will bring a consistent predictable and fair business approach to the district.

I was a co-founder of Leadership Lake Tahoe and the Education Foundation. Tamara and I raised five kids here and have been foster parents. We’ve been involved in every aspect of making life better for families, including education, affordable housing, coaching sports, music, and church youth groups. We love our town. Your vote will send a message that you want fair, independent leaders who respect the past and embrace the future.

I’ll honor your vote with common sense and hard work.
