Man arrested after armed robbery at South Lake Tahoe gas station

UPDATE: The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has updated the initial report of an armed robbery at the Chevron Gas Station on Wednesday evening. The suspect, later identified as William Ehlers, entered the gas station at approximately 3:30 p.m.and held the clerk at gunpoint.

Ehlers left with an undisclosed amount of money and an energy drink.

Surveillance video showed the suspect had identifiable tattoos and a black handgun. SLTPD officers and detectives arrived and began investigating. About an hour and a half after the robbery, the suspect was later tracked to a home near Gardner and Taylor Way. The SLTPD SWAT Team was activated and a search warrant was obtained. Ehlers was taken into custody without force and the home was searched. The gun and energy drink were recovered.

Ehlers is currently in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe on a $190,000 bail hold: Armed Robbery with a bail of $50,000 and Assault with a firearm with a bail of $100,000.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One man was arrested Wednesday evening as the suspect in an earlier armed robbery of the Chevron gas station in South Lake Tahoe.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., a man entered the Chevron station at 2304 Lake Tahoe Blvd. and took two items from the cooler to the front counter to be purchased. He allegedly showed a handgun to the clerk, demanding money, and fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Nearby Grocery Outlet had surveillance film that showed the suspect vehicle used in the robbery and a search began for the vehicle. An officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (STLPD) located it on Taylor Way.

As officers were waiting for search and arrest warrants, the suspect walked out of the home to leave in his truck. SLTPD conducted a felony stop on the truck and arrested the suspect, 40-year-old William Ehlers. SLTPD Lt. Scott Crivelli said Ehlers was cooperative.

SLTPD is still at the scene, waiting for the search warrant so they can enter the home.
