North Fire near Emigrant Gap at 500 acres, 10% containment

8:20 p.m. update 8/4/18: The North Fire acreage has grown to approximately 700 acres. It continues to burn in the North Fork of the American River Canyon, and area characterized by steep, rugged terrain. The Helibase has been been moved to Truckee. It remains at 10% contained.

9:00 a.m. update 9/4/18: Updated mapping has shown the North fire has burned 500 acres. Hand crews, dozers, and engines worked through the night establishing an anchor point and starting to flank the fire with handline, hose lays, and dozer line. 10 percent contained.

TAHOE NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. - A wildland fire about 40 miles west of Lake Tahoe in the Tahoe National Forest has quickly burned 650 acres after starting Monday afternoon around 4:40 p.m.

The North Fire started in the North Fork Campground in the American River Canyon, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office. They spent the evening evacuating three area campgrounds and residences. As of 8:16 p.m., they have stopped evacuating any additional areas.

North Fork Campground, Onion Valley Campground and Tunnel Mills Campground on Texas Hill Road have been evacuated.

Resources currently responding and/or ordered include 14 Hand Crews, 20 Engines, 5 Bulldozers, 5 Water Tenders. At daylight Tuesday, 5 helicopters and 7 fixed-wing aircraft including a VLAT will be attacking the fire.
