US 395 remains closed as Boot Fire grows to 6706 acres

12:45 p.m. update 9/6/18: The Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators have updated the acreage burned in the Boot Fire to 6,706 acres and there is a three-percent containment line.

US 395 from Walker to Bridgeport remains closed as does CA SR 108. There is a detour available through Holbrook Junction.

Firefighters have a three-percent containment line around the Boot Fire which has now burned 4,620 acres in an area along US 395 nine miles SW of Walker and 15 miles NW of Bridgeport.

US 395 is closed from the junction of SR 108 to 10.6 miles south of the junction of SR 89. There is a detour available.

There are several evacuations in place including Leavitt Meadows Campground, Leavitt Meadows Pack Station, Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, Devil’s Gate Pass, Swauger Creek and Fales Hot Springs.

During the next 24 hours, the 400 firefighters at the scene will be facing extreme fire behavior with fire direction from north, northwest and southeast escalating. They will be concentrating on protecting single family homes, several campgrounds, US Military Training facility, utilities, power poles, as well as endangered species including the Lahontan Cutthroat and Sage Grouse.

Today they will be experiencing continued thunderstorm activity with erratic gusty outflow winds and lightning. Temperatures in the mid-80s, minimum humidity 12-16 percent, predominate southwest winds 10-15 mph with gusts to 22 and strong outflow winds from thunderstorms.

The fire started on Tuesday September 4 at approximately 2:30 p.m. Its cause remains under investigation.
