With Labor Day Weekend behind us, the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) and the Palisades Village Neighborhood Company are partnering up for the return of what has become many locals’ favorite annual event. The Guitar Strings vs. Chicken Wings fundraiser is set to return to the Village at Palisades Tahoe after a two-year lapse (due to COVID and the Caldor Fire). The triumphant return of this popular event will be on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, with music starting at 5 p.m.
The event celebrates local bands and local restaurants in a fun competition. All of the proceeds support TINS’ mission of connecting people to nature and inspiring a new generation of stewards for the wonders of Lake Tahoe.
“When we started the event 11 years ago, we wanted to create a unique, fun event that was for the community, and that showcased both the musical and culinary talent in the region,” says TINS Co-Founder and Executive Director, Will Richardson. “First-timers have to wrap their heads around the voting, but it’s tons of fun, and hopefully we can raise some funds to support our education and research programs, like our in-school and field science programs, applied wildlife research, and free community nature outings.”
When attendees purchase wings and drink tickets they are also given voting tokens to cast for their favorite band and chicken wing recipe. This year, six local bands are vying for the crown. Over the course of the evening, they’ll each perform two sets outside the different restaurants vying for the chicken wing crown.
The competition is friendly but fierce, with head chefs proudly developing signature recipes for the event. Owner/operator Randy Rogers has won the wings category for both Auld Dubliner and Tremigo. These two restaurants are perennial favorites to beat, but every year impresses with the diversity of delicious, creative recipes. The wings trophy sits in the winner’s restaurant for one year until the next year’s competition. The winning band is awarded a $500 cash prize and considerable bragging rights.
