LTUSD to discuss next phase of learning for South Lake Tahoe students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees will be holding their next meeting on Tuesday, September 22. Closed session begins at 5:00 p.m. and regular session starts at 6:00 p.m.
On the agenda will be discussion about the anticipated move to the next phase of reopening, the hybrid model.
When LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler laid out the reopening phases on July 30 he said the first phase would last at least six weeks and a decision would be made on September 21 about the following six weeks. Continuation of Phase One which is all distance learning or Phase Two, the hybrid model.
Phase 2 Hybrid Model:
* Stable and/or decreasing community spread
* Test positivity rate < 8% or Case Rate < 100/100,000
* Health system capacity
As of September 21, the El Dorado County rates of COVID-19 have been declining and is currently at a rate of 31 new cases in the last 14 days, a 1.4 percent positivity rate and a Lake Tahoe case rate of 53 per 100,000 people. There are currently no positive cases of COVID-19 at Barton Hospital.
In comparison, on September 4 there was a positivity rate of 1.8 percent, there were 56 new cases in 14 days and the Lake Tahoe case rate was 93 per 100,000. On July 31 that rate was 357 per 100,000.
According to the LTUSD agenda, focus will be first on health and safety education including the use of face coverings, frequent handwashing, and remaining 6 feet apart in the hybrid model. Nurses are working on developing hand washing education, illness protocols, and tracking and monitoring illnesses among students and staff.
Health education will focus on the procedures for symptom checking, isolating and quarantining that have been developed. Messages from school nurses to families and staff will be communicated weekly prior to starting Phase II.
The hybrid model puts students on four or five days of in-person learning time for every ten day period, depending on grade level. The other days are spent learning remotely.
The Trustees will discuss with Cutler how the hybrid model with work with transportation, scheduling and food services.
