Deaf climbers who summited Mount Everest coming to Lake Tahoe for public talk

Event Date:
October 6, 2023 - 4:30pm

Two deaf mountaineers are heading to Lake Tahoe to share the story of their successful summiting of Mount Everest. Tahoe Family Hearing Clinic is bringing the pair, Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger to Outdoor Gear Lab on Friday, October 6 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Scott and Shayna became the third and fourth deaf people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, with Shayna being the first deaf female!

They will be sharing their experiences and showcasing hands-on demos of equipment. Both are profoundly deaf and have climbed some of the world’s highest mountains, like Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Denali, Mont Blanc, and Matterhorn. Scott and Shayna picked up skills mostly through YouTube videos and asking others through paper and pen because of the lack of accessibility in outdoor education. They have made it their mission to bridge the gap between the outdoors and the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

The event is free but space is limited so please RSVP. Visit here to register.

Outdoor Gear Lab is located at 183 Highway 50 at Round Hill, Nevada.
