Quarry Fire in Stanislaus National Forest sending smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The smell of smoke and hazy skies around Lake Tahoe on Saturday are from a fire burning in the Stanislaus National Forest. Two weeks ago there were 38 ignitions on the Forest from lightning storms. Most are out, but the U.S. Forest Service is letting the Quarry Fire burn within predetermined parameters to accomplish a few goals including reducing concentrations of dead ground fuels, re-establishing multigenerational timber stands, improving wildlife habitat, promoting vegetation diversity, and introducing fire into fire-adapted ecosystems. Crews are stationed to monitor the fire.

The fire is now 900 acres.

The wind changed on Saturday to be from the southwest, sending any smoke from the Quarry Fire into the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento area have had air quality issues this week from the fires in Northern California and Oregon.
