Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, students found their voice about climate change and the varsity volleyball team travels to archrival Truckee in a battle for the league’s top spot.

Climate Change Strike

Last Friday, hundreds of students at STHS walked out of their classes in protest against climate change inaction. Some even marched down towards the Lakeview Commons and spoke in front of locals. Inspired by the strike, other students are coming together to find more effective ways of protest.

Seniors Logan Chapman and Anthony Pedigo have started a group that meets every week to discuss steps students and administrators can take to battle climate change. They call themselves the “Climate Crew.”

“The Climate Crew is a club where ideas can be heard,” said Chapman. “We will work with professionals from around the lake and with our school officials to create real change.”

Students are already signing up.

“Our hopes for this club is to reduce our carbon footprint at the school, and as individuals,” said Kobe Sitchon, a member of the Climate Crew.

Among their first actions, Chapman and Pedigo plan to speak with the head of nutrition at Lake Tahoe Unified School District about taking red meat off the school lunch menu. They’re also approaching STHS about creating mandatory lessons for each class about the effects of climate change.
