Magnet School changes name to Meyers Elementary, Home of the Bears

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced the changing of the name of Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESMS) to Meyers Elementary School, Home of the Bears. The new name is actually the same as the original when the school opened in 1967.

In 2004, LTUSD was facing declining enrollment as the state was in the midst of a fiscal crisis with resulting budget cuts. They closed Meyers Elementary at that time, moving its students to other elementary schools. Parents got together and worked with the District to reopen the Meyers campus as a magnet school the following year.

This renaming aligns with the school's vision of academic excellence, building relationships, community engagement, and embracing its unique identity.

The decision to change the name was made after thoughtful consideration and consultations with various education partners, including parents, students, staff, and the wider community. The mascot of the bear recognizes the local wildlife in our community. The name change reflects the school's dedication to providing a nurturing and inspiring educational environment where every student can thrive and build positive relationships.

"The change of name is a testament to our ongoing commitment to fostering a strong sense of community and pride among our students, staff, and families," said Joel Dameral, principal of Meyers Elementary School. "We believe that the new name resonates with the spirit and values of our school, while emphasizing our identity in the local community as a safe place for learning and growth."

The school’s new logo was voted on by the students and highlights the importance of local environmental stewardship.

Key Highlights of the Name Change:
● Community Representation: The name "Meyers" pays homage to the local area and history, highlighting the importance of the close-knit community.
● Symbolism of Bears: The addition of "Home of the Bears" symbolizes strength, resilience, and the school's dedication to nurturing students who embody these qualities.

“We are embarking on an exciting journey as Meyers Elementary School," added Dameral. "This new school year marks the beginning of a fresh chapter, filled with promise, growth, and a strong sense of community. Our commitment to academic excellence remains steadfast, and we look forward to fostering a positive, inclusive, and empowering environment for all our students. As we embrace this new identity, we are united in our dedication to nurturing young minds and shaping the leaders of tomorrow."

As things changed over the last 18 years, LTESMS was no longer fitting the definition of a magnet school: A public school offering special instruction and programs not available elsewhere, designed to attract a more diverse student body from throughout a school district.

LTUSD said they are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and empowering learning environment, dedicated to providing exceptional educational experiences and opportunities for all students - all while striving to prepare students for success in an ever-changing world.
