Bob Baunhauser Unsung Heroes recognized at celebration

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Six people were recognized as the community's unsung heroes during a recognition ceremony sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe and the South Tahoe Chamber.

The award is named the Bob Baunhauser Excellence in Service Award in recognition of the longtime local man who exemplified service. He selflessly gave his time and resources to others, especially the children of the community, without any expectation of publicity or recognition.

Funds left to the Kiwanis after Bob's death have helped many projects, including supporting scholarships and awards like the Unsung Heroes.

Each of the winners was nominated by friends or coworkers. During the September 28 ceremony, those who nominated read their stories as to why their nominees deserved recognition, and how they demonstrated some of the same qualities as Bob.

Top honors were given to Joanne Schope of Christmas Cheer. She was given a framed certificate and $1,100.

The other honorees were also given framed certificates and $350 each:
Larry Schussel, Live Violence Free
Glen Gerrard (Mr. Glen), Tahoe Valley Elementary
Miguel Correa, South Tahoe Middle School
Karl Koeppen, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue.

Marvin Buchmiller, Kiwanian, and special needs mentor was honored posthumously and his widow Liz spoke of his life of serving in South Lake Tahoe.
