NDOT video about snowplowing on Mt. Rose wins national award

A video depicting Nevada highway winter snow removal has been named a winner in the national “Faces of Transportation” competition sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) Photographer Sholeh Moll’s video depicting wintertime snow removal on Mt. Rose Highway won the competition’s In-House Production/Amateur/Novice category for its up-close and personal video of a Snow Plow Ride-Along on Mount Rose. The video, produced last winter, features NDOT maintenance supervisor Russell Hires as he uses an NDOT snow plow to remove snow on Mt. Rose Highway.

NDOT has approximately 150 maintenance staff in northwestern Nevada. During major winter storms, crews work in 12-hour shifts, rotating personnel to provide 24 hour-a-day snow removal. In the Mt. Rose Highway and adjoining areas alone, NDOT staff spent nearly 6,000 man hours last winter removing snow and ice.

“We’re dedicated to providing a transportation network that helps keep Nevadans safe and connected,” NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon explained. “In winter specifically, that includes clearing ice and snow from state roads for a safer drive. I am very proud of all of our NDOT staff who work tirelessly to keep Nevada roads safe and clear, and this video is a good inside look at one of the important ways we do that.”

More than 100 photos and videos from 16 state departments of transportation and private citizens were entered into the national competition in various categories. NDOT has won the competition in previous years, including a win for best overall photo. Videos and photos from this year’s competition are available to view at www.facesoftransportation.org.
