This past Sunday at Keep Sierra Clean Day, 300 people from Sierra-at-Tahoe’s loyal community collected nearly 1,300 pounds of trash from the slopes, including unique finds like an electric toothbrush, several snowboards and even a ski from Sierra Ski Ranch. Awards were given in categories such as the strangest find, oldest find and the best haul weight to body weight ratio. Participants reconnected and fueled up with an Italian-inspired lunch at the new Solstice Eatery, then kicked back on the Solstice Plaza listening to Reggie Hall. Groups from around the basin and West Slope came to support Keep Sierra Clean Day, representing the Sierra Education Foundation and the local Boy Scouts along with local high school ski and snowboard teams.
Sierra has long been lauded as an environmentally conscious resort, applying many green initiatives including recycling and waste reduction programs. “It’s one thing to be recognized in environmental excellence but Sierra finds true pride in the many supporters of this community that make such a massive and valiant effort to be a part of it,” says General Manager John Rice. “Many people consider this mountain home, so it’s really no different than a little constructive yard work.”
Keep Sierra Clean Day is a great event to bring the community together in preparation for the upcoming winter. Each season it’s exciting to see what treasures are left behind when the snow melts and reminds guests to care for our winter playground so that it will maintain its beauty. By keeping the mountain clean, we pave way for Mother Nature to leave her fresh blanket of pure snow in a place that’s ready for it.
