New fire chief hired for the City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ken Harrison has been hired to take the helm of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue. The former battalion chief with the Orange County Fire Authority is bringing years of experience to the lake.

The City hasn't had anyone in the permanent fire chief position since the departure of Jeff Meston retired in February of this year. Battalion Chief Jim Drennan and retired Chief Bruce Martin have shared the duties over the past eight months.

Over his 27 years in fire service, Chief Harrison has run the gamut of fire service position from firefighter/paramedic to fire captain and, most recently, battalion chief.

“We are proud to have someone with the experience and dedication Ken Harrison will bring to the Fire Department in South Lake Tahoe,” said City Manager Frank Rush. “Fire safety is a top priority in the City and the expertise Harrison brings to South Lake Tahoe will keep us moving in the right direction.”

Harrison received his bachelor’s degree from Long Beach State University, is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program, a certified Chief Officer, a certified paramedic, and a certified Instructor with California State Fire Training.

“Fire service has been my life’s work and my passion for almost 30 years,” said Harrison, “I’m thrilled to be bringing my experience to the talented team in South Lake Tahoe and I look forward to what we can accomplish together.”

Outside of work Harrison enjoys skiing, biking, and hiking. He’s moving with his wife of 24 years, Suzanne. The Harrisons are no stranger to Lake Tahoe. They lived in the Lake Tahoe area and were married here in the mid-’90s. They have three children, Charlie, Cody, and Caylee.

Harrison will start as Fire Chief on November 4.
