SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project will wrap up with a ribbon-cutting and celebration next week. The event was scheduled originally for Tuesday, but weather delays have pushed the ribbon-cutting back to Halloween.
The October 31 ceremony will take place at Sierra Boulevard and US50 from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Five months of work on the .6 mile, $6 million Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project will wrap up with the ribbon-cutting and celebration.
The mostly grant-funded project includes a mixed-use recreational trail, sidewalk, driveway connections, curbs, gutters, drainage system, stormwater infiltration, stormwater treatment, new bike lanes as well as parking along the boulevard and lighting at each intersection.
“This is a project that really benefits the entire community,” said Ray Jarvis, Public Works Director. “These improvements on Sierra Boulevard have been a long time coming, and these changes represent more than road work, this project is truly a quality of life project as well.”
Originally planned for the 2018 building season, the project was delayed due to extra restrictions due to federal highway funds used on it. Rather than spreading work into two years, crews started in May 2019.
“The Sierra Blvd. project is just one more example of the City making good on its promises and City Council’s priorities,” said City Manager Frank Rush, “Maintaining our roads has been a top priority for the City and the work done on Sierra Boulevard shows the City’s commitment to making sure those priorities become reality.”
City Council and staff will be on hand to celebrate the reopening of Sierra Blvd. and to highlight the work that has been done in that area.
Street maintenance was also completed in the Gardner Mountain area. In 2019 the City completed almost 3 miles of street maintenance with plans to rehabilitate 5-6 miles of roads every year in the future.
