American Legion Post 795 hosts Veterans Day ceremony in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is invited to a Veterans Day ceremony at the American Legion Hall on Friday, November 11 at 11 a.m.

American Legion Post 795 has extended the invitation on behalf of their group, the American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion.

“We encourage community members to join us for this important day,” said American Legion Post 795 Commander, Tom Millham. “Veterans Day is an opportunity to recognize and honor all veterans who served and those who continue to serve at home and abroad in order to preserve the freedom we enjoy.“

The Lake Tahoe Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will also take part in the ceremony to give special recognition to Vietnam War veterans and their families to thank them for their service and sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation. All local Vietnam War veterans are invited to attend and will be recognized and presented with a Vietnam Veteran commemorative lapel pin and certificate.

The American Legion Hall is located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe. Light refreshments will be served.

Formerly Armistice Day, Nov. 11 commemorates the anniversary of the 1918 peace agreement that ended World War I. It’s historically significant that this day is observed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of the eleventh day to commemorate when the guns fell silent at11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.

Happy Homestead Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 700 veterans. Legion members and volunteers will place flags on their gravesites to honor them this Veterans Day. Those interested in helping can meet at the cemetery on Thursday, Nov. 10, beginning at 10 a.m. Happy Homestead is located at 1261 Johnson Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe.
