Stephen Richard Kyte ~ 1950 – 2021

Steve Kyte died peacefully, on November 24, 2021, in Palo Alto, California, at the home of his sister, from the effects of brain cancer (glioblastoma), surrounded by family and under the care of Mission Hospice. He was 71.

Steve was born on April 10, 1950, to Ruth Gardiner Kyte and Donald Kyte in Lynwood, California. He grew up in South Gate, a suburb of Los Angeles, where he attended State Street Elementary School, South Gate Junior High, and graduated from South Gate High School in 1968. He attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College where he studied electronics.

Steve worked in both motorcycle repair and electronics for several companies in the Los Angeles area after he finished his education. He lived in Pahrump, Nevada for a time where he had his own satellite installation business and where he worked for his aunt and uncle, Nita and Bill Little, providing electronic and mechanical support for their bowling alley. He moved to Palo Alto, California in 1986 and began working for Prime Image, a video technology company based in San Jose, California that built equipment for the television industry. One of his favorite products was the Time Machine, a device that cut audio and video frames from a television show in real-time (and undetectable to the television viewer) allowing more commercial time to be sold by local television stations. Steve was a dedicated worker at Prime Image, working long hours to fix bugs and always trying to learn more about the products he was supporting. As part of his job, he traveled to most of the major television production studios and satellite distribution sites around the United States, providing support for Prime Image products. Steve retired in 2015 after working for 30 years at Prime Image.

Steve lived in San Jose, South Lake Tahoe, and Union City (all in California) during his retirement. He continued to work on electronics projects and various house projects. He loved to share what he knew with family, helping each of us with things that we just didn’t know how to do. And he always did so with loving kindness.

Steve is survived by four siblings: Jody Taylor (David) of South Lake Tahoe, California; Jill Kyte (Steve Levine) of Palo Alto, California; Julie Shor (Dan) of Kent, Washington, and Michael Kyte (Marti Ford) of Moscow, Idaho. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Lyndsay Bryant (Steve), Chris Taylor, Cass Stauffer (Eric), Jen Taylor (Kyle), Adam Shor, Brian Shor, Vel Levine, Zoe Levine, Brooke Johnson (Jim), and Brendan Williams. He is also survived by grandniece Hannah Stauffer and grandnephews Gabe Williams, Mike Williams, and Blake Williams.

He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Kyte, his father Donald Kyte, his sister Jane Kyte, and his grandniece Lilly Taylor.

The family is grateful for the doctors and staff at Stanford Medical Center for the care and support that they gave to Steve during his illness.

Donations in Steve’s memory may be made to Mission Hospice of San Mateo (https://www.missionhospice.org) in gratitude for their tender and loving care during Steve’s last days. No memorial service is planned. Condolences and memories for the family may be sent to SteveKyteMemories@gmail.com.
