Both Bijou and Magnet schools set to reopen after gas and water issues

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If unusual issues come in threes, then its now safe for schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD).

Following on the heels of the November 11 fire at Sierra House Elementary, two more schools in LTUSD had issues this week that caused the schools to close.

At Bijou Community School a gas leak was detected at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. An employee at the school thought they smelled gas and SW Gas responded. There are two main gas lines to the school, both entering the building from a main valve. The gas company recommended shutting off gas at this valve so the LTUSD employees could make repairs..

Students at the school were sent home and the school remained closed on Tuesday so repairs could be completed.

A secondary gas line which leads to the portables will remain shut down until additional minor repairs are completed. Three of the four portables will have temporary electrical heating.

Workers continue to clean up materials on campus so you may still see trucks and workers in the area.

The campus is safe and school will reopen on Thursday, December 6, as regularly scheduled.

Over at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School in Meyers a water main burst just after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The school contacted parents and staff to alert them school would be closed Wednesday so repairs could be made.

The school will reopen on Thursday as well.
