Winter Weather Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee from Sunday, December 13at 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. Monday.

This next storm is expected to drop more snow that the one overnight Friday. This morning Heavenly reported no new snow, and Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe reported 3". There were chain controls over US50 andI80 but they have lifted, and controls are still in place on SR88 by Kirkwood.

Sunday's system is expected to drop up to 2-4" of snow below 6500 feet, and 6-14" above 6500 feet. The heaviest snow will be near and west of SR89. The snow level will rise to 7200 feet during the day Sunday.

Wind will be from the south at 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph in South Lake Tahoe Sunday. The high should be around 44 with a low of 21.

Travel could be difficult, mainly over passes during the day and at all elevations by late afternoon Sunday. The hazardous road conditions could also impact the Monday morning commute. Chain or snow tire restrictions are possible.

Lake Tahoe waters will be rough and choppy Sunday with wave heights 2 to 3 feet, locally up to 4 feet. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
