South Tahoe Refuse offering smaller cart sizes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Refuse (STR) has some good news for residents hoping for smaller residential trash carts. STR announced Thursday that smaller new cart size options are now available for California customers, with Nevada customers getting the option in 2024.

When STR was developing the plan to transition to carts for garbage, recycling, and yard waste to comply with SB 1383, the cart manufacturer did not offer a 35-gallon animal-resistant cart for garbage. When the program was announced, STR heard from many customers who would prefer smaller cart options and understand that space constraints are a real issue. Therefore, they worked with the manufacturer on a solution and are happy to announce that customers may now choose a 35-gallon animal-resistant garbage cart as well as a 65-gallon recycle cart.

California customers can click here for information on all of the options and to fill out the online form to make or update your selections (Note: if you fill out this form, the responses will supersede any that have already been submitted).

Carts will not be delivered until summer 2024. Customers who already submitted their form and do not want to make any changes to their selections don’t need to do anything further.

Please note that if your household does not respond to any of the surveys mailed/emailed the default shipment for California customers is one 95-gallon garbage cart, one 95-gallon recycle cart, and one 95-gallon yard waste cart.

Once carts are delivered in Summer 2024, changes will be accommodated if you find that the size/selection does not work for you, but only one change per customer per year is allowed.

If you have a multi-family property serviced with a dumpster, STR will contact you about service options. In addition, they will be reaching out to Nevada customers in 2024 with updated service options.

More info can be found on STR’s 3-cart webpage.
