One-way traffic control continues on US50 - expect impact to holiday traffic flow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One-way reversing traffic control remains in place on U.S. Highway 50 just east of Echo Summit for blasting and clearing work after a rockfall sent large boulders onto the roadway late Tuesday night.

Caltrans crews are working around the clock to clear the boulders, estimated to be about 90 tons in total. The largest so far have been between 5-7 tons. Neil’s Controlled Blasting of Newcastle has been brought in to help with rock scaling and drilling to expedite the work. Caltrans has its specialized explosive team based out of its Meyers Maintenance Yard to blow up the larger boulders.

Delays have been about 10-15 minutes, but motorists should expect longer wait times on Friday and Saturday due to increased holiday traffic. Traffic may also be held in both directions depending on the nature of the work. The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of materials, or other unexpected events.

The department will issue updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic, click on Caltrans’ QuickMap or download the QuickMap app from the App Store or Google Play.
