New on the South Shore: Neighborhood Burgers opens on Kingsbury

A new burger place has opened on the South Shore, giving residents on the Nevada side of town a new option for eating out (or on the run).

Neighborhood Burgers was opened by locals Erik Watada and Matt Grime, and in less than a week of being open its already a hit.

Grime, owner of The Fox & Hound at the top of Kingsbury, joined Watada in providing an option for people to get a quick bite, especially those on the Nevada side where options are at a minimum.

Located behind the gas station on lower Kingsbury (once home to Luigi Pizza),it gives people heading up or down the hill a place to get a burger, salad or fries as well as a large assortment (over 35 types) of root beer, and soft ice cream.

Even though they just opened on December 26, many people are already aware of a "secret menu," one that includes chili cheese fries and other treats not on the regular menu.

Neighborhood Burger truly is a neighborhood place as they feature eat from Overland Meat and Seafood, buns from Sugar Pine Baker and seasonings from Diane Weidinger's Heart Rock Herb & Spice Co. The LED screen in front shows a string of upcoming local non-profit events.

When one enters they grab a pen and menu from the wall holder and select what they want on their beef or chicken burger or salad. Choices range from sauteed mushrooms and banana peppers to dried berries and Thai Peanut Sauce. Fries come with "shakers" which are blends from Heart Rock including Pepper Garlic, Spicy and Jerk.

There are always specials which are highlighted on a special board above the cash register. For the grand opening they've had peppermint pieces which one young man had on his hamburger Monday night. It got a "thumbs up" from the young diner.

Grime says they want to attract high school students and sports teams and their open seating style with long tables will welcome them. There are no plans at this time to offer alcohol since they do want the younger crowd to feel welcome.

The two co-owners are members of Tahoe Douglas Rotary (Matt is the current President) and pictures of several other members and their own children cover the walls of the restaurant, all with a burger named after them.

Neighborhood Burgers is open from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week. They take on line orders, a perfect solution for heading off the slopes or heading over the hill after work. Their website: www.neighborhoodburgers.com.
