AAUW to honor local Tech Trek girls

The South Lake Tahoe Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) sponsors girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to attend a week-long residential camp on the campus of UC Davis.

Interested girls are nominated by their 7th-grade science or math teachers, then fill out an application, write an essay, and are then interviewed for a chance to be awarded one of the up to three local sponsorships.

Ninety-four girls from Northern California participate in core classes, workshops, presentations, and special field trips on campus.

AAUW South Lake Tahoe General Meeting, Nov. 16th @ 10 AM

Our November general meeting will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16th at 10 AM at the LTCC Mason Library in the Board Room. Our program will feature Frank Gerdeman, the new Director of Advance, a community-based program whose staff is housed at the college.  ADVANCE is a collaborative network of local organizations, government offices, and employers, able to provide access to a wide range of services that help adults meet educational, career, and personal goals.

AAUW-South Lake Tahoe General Meeting Our next meeting will be held on April 6, 2019 at 10 AM at the Robert Maloff Center, home to the Barton Center for Orthopedics and Wellness. The Center is located at 2170 South Ave., South Lake Tahoe. We will be meeting in the lobby at the front desk where Adriana Covell will explain the benefits of having a health coach and then give us a tour of the facility.

The public is welcome and light refreshments will be served.
 

AAUW General Meeting - Amanda Horn, Nevada Museum of Art on the Anne Brigman Photography Exhibit

Join both the Friends of the Library and AAUW-South Lake Tahoe for a presentation by Amanda Horn of the Nevada Museum of Art on Anne Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Art on Saturday, November 10, 10:99 a.m. in the Lake Tahoe Community College Aspen/Board Room.

This major retrospective exhibition, which is at the Reno museum through January 27, 2019, rediscovers and celebrates the work of Anne Brigman (1869-1950) who is best known for her iconic landscape photographs made in the early 1900s depicting herself and other female nudes outdoors in the Sierra Nevada.

AAUW general meeting to include Safety for Women program

Welcome our Tech Trek attendees who will be giving us a presentation on their summer experience at UC Davis. Our presenters are 8th grade girls who attended our scholarship sponsored week long technology camp.

We will have an array of light refreshments and visitors are welcome. Please attend if you are interested in finding out more about what our local AAUW organization is involved in. There will be a brief business meeting to inform about our small group programming for fall.

AAUW South Lake Tahoe sponsors Tech Trek campers

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), recently awarded three sponsorships to a week-long STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) focused Tech Trek Camp on the UC Davis campus in July. The winners are Kyla Schrauben, Daniela Bonilla, and Evelyn Bennett  All three girls are from South Tahoe Middle School, with an alternate, Mia Roper, chosen from Whittell.

These girls who are entering 8th grade next September were nominated by their science/math teachers and selected following a personal interview.

AAUW-South Lake Tahoe awards two scholarships

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the American Association of University Women AAUW) recently awarded two $1500 scholarships to women graduating from Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) who are going on to further their education at the college or university level.

The club's two winners this year are both from South Lake Tahoe.

Hannah Brown attained an Associate’s degree in math and Spanish from LTCC and will be attending UC Davis to major in computer science.

South Tahoe Water Issues: A Conversation with Richard Solbrig

AAUW will be holding their general meeting and program in the LTCC board room in the Roberta Mason Library on Saturday, May 12 at 10:30 AM. Richard Solbrig, General Manager and engineer with the South Tahoe Public Utility District will talk about water issues, including rate hikes, meters and water supply.  Come with questions.  This meeting is open to the public and light refreshments will be provided.

Public AAUW meeting to focus on Lake Tahoe transportation issues

The public is invited to join the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at their next general meeting in South Lake Tahoe when the featured speaker will be Carl Hasty from the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD). They will be meeting on Saturday, February 10 at 10:30 a.m. in the Aspen/Board Room of Lake Tahoe Community College.

Hasty will discuss Lake Tahoe Basin transit issues, including the proposed Loop Road. This is an issue that affects our entire community.

How Leadership Lake Tahoe changed my life

Since 2003 there has been Leadership Lake Tahoe and a few hundred people can now say they've graduated from this worthwhile program. What started as an annual joint venture between the two Chambers of Commerce that served the South Shore is now a biennial leadership experience.

I was a member of Leadership Lake Tahoe in 2006 and I can say that it changed my life.

AAUW -- South Lake Tahoe hosts open house

AAUW – South Lake Tahoe will host a “Meet and Greet” Open House on Thursday, May 7 from 3-5 pm at the Creekside Room at Lake Tahoe Community College. At this informal drop-in event, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the organization’s programs, interest groups, and sponsorship of various educational opportunities for local students. Refreshments will be served.

Second Annual Tahoe Treasures Tour

The Second Annual Tahoe Treasures Tour is slated for July 12, 2014. Sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women, Tahoe Nevada Branch), the event will feature some of Incline Village's most elegant, creatively decorated homes, lush and lovely gardens, Asian, western and local art, and inspiring lake views. The newly opened Holman Arts & Media Center at Sierra Nevada College will also be included in this self-guided tour. Afternoon tea and tapas will be served and attendees may purchase raffle tickets for valuable prizes and shop at the Tahoe Treasures Boutique.

Bear Biologist to speak Saturday, Jan. 12 at LTCC

Bookstore pops up at the Village Center

Shoppers who visit the just-opened Lake Tahoe Books and Art store in the Village Center won’t just be tackling their holiday gift lists — they’ll also be part of an experiment.
The store, which will be open through December and possibly longer, is in part a test to see if there is enough community support for a permanent, full-service bookstore at the South Shore.
