The AAUW – South Lake Tahoe Branch is a branch of the American Association of University Women, a national organization of more than 170,000 members and supporters. Founded in 1881, the AAUW has been the voice heard at the national level promoting education equity for girls and women.

The AAUW today seeks to continue to unite graduates of educational institutions and be a powerful advocate and visible leader in equity and education through research, philanthropy, and measurable change in critical areas impacting the lives of women and girls.

The South Lake Tahoe Branch is one of more than 100 branches in California. As an active branch of the California and National AAUW since 1964, our purpose is to promote equity, education, intellectual growth, individual worth, and development of opportunities for women and girls. We currently have approximately 30 members from both the California and Nevada sides of the south shore of Lake Tahoe. The California state organization AAUW-CA has 20,000 members. In addition, there are 48 college and university campus partners throughout California. The Nevada state organization can be reached at http://aauw-nv.aauw.net/. Visitors and guests are encouraged to attend a meeting or two before deciding to join the organization.

At the present time we are conducting our general meetings through Zoom and our book club and Great Decisions group are meeting monthly on Zoom. We also have a movie group, writing group and hiking/skiing group that will begin meeting again after the pandemic.

We welcome all women interested in learning more about our organization and advocating for our mission. Membership is open to women and men who hold an associate or equivalent, or baccalaureate degree from accredited universities or colleges. We have several forms of membership and DO NOT require a sponsorship by another member. The South Lake Tahoe Branch conducts a fundraiser each year to award 1)$1500 scholarships to 2 women at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) who are transferring on to a four-year college or university and three camperships to
girls completing the seventh grade to attend a week long summer camp in math/science/computers at UC Davis.

If you are interested in joining us for a Zoom meeting please contact Jeanne Benin at jlbenin@charter.net. Also look for announcements of upcoming events on our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/ sltbranch/
