Heavenly at Lake Tahoe celebrates with early opening

Lifts began turning at Heavenly Mountain Resort at 9 a.m. Wednesday, signaling the return of winter to Lake Tahoe and the region's ski and snowboard destination. Early-season storms combined with the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system have given Heavenly the ability to stage its earliest opening since 2004-05. All access to the mountain at this time is through the Heavenly Gondola and Tamarack Express.

Lake Tahoe ski and snowboard swap at MontBleu to benefit Heavenly foundation

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the 24th Annual Ski and Snowboard Swap at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa on Saturday Nov. 17.
Proceeds will benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides skiing and snowboarding programs and events for regional youth and local middle school and high school students. The swap runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Coroner: Boy froze to death in remote Alpine County area

A 14-year-old Angels Camp boy found dead in a remote mountain area last week apparently succumbed to exposure, the Calaveras County Coroner said Monday.
Taylor Dustin froze to death after he and his uncle, Devin Smith of Douglas Flat, got lost during a hunting trip in Alpine County, officials said.
Smith, 40, survived, but suffered from hypothermia.

Searchers find man alive, teenager dead after hunters go missing in Alpine County

Search crews on Tuesday found a hunter alive in Alpine County but suffering from severe hypothermia and then three hours later found his teenage nephew dead.
Devin Andrew Smith, 40, of Douglas Flat, Calif., and his nephew, Taylor Brent Dustin, 14, of Angels Camp, Calif., were camping in the Hermit Valley area about 22 miles south of Lake Tahoe and did not return from a deer hunt on Sunday, the Alpine County Sheriff's Office said.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation has opened registration for the 2011 – 2012 Alpine, Freestyle, Freeride and Snowboard Programs. With a variety of options from the One-Day Program to the Full-Time Competitive Program, the Lake Tahoe foundation has something for all ages and levels of skiers and riders. Registration packets are available online, at the HSSF building, or by calling the HSSF administration office. Those who register and pay in full now will receive the early registration pricing; prices increase $100 on November 1, 2011.
