Heavenly at Lake Tahoe celebrates with early opening

Lifts began turning at Heavenly Mountain Resort at 9 a.m. Wednesday, signaling the return of winter to Lake Tahoe and the region's ski and snowboard destination. Early-season storms combined with the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system have given Heavenly the ability to stage its earliest opening since 2004-05. All access to the mountain at this time is through the Heavenly Gondola and Tamarack Express.

Lake Tahoe ski and snowboard swap at MontBleu to benefit Heavenly foundation

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the 24th Annual Ski and Snowboard Swap at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa on Saturday Nov. 17.
Proceeds will benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides skiing and snowboarding programs and events for regional youth and local middle school and high school students. The swap runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
Coroner: Boy froze to death in remote Alpine County area
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 10/30/2012 - 3:54pmA 14-year-old Angels Camp boy found dead in a remote mountain area last week apparently succumbed to exposure, the Calaveras County Coroner said Monday.
Taylor Dustin froze to death after he and his uncle, Devin Smith of Douglas Flat, got lost during a hunting trip in Alpine County, officials said.
Smith, 40, survived, but suffered from hypothermia.

Searchers find man alive, teenager dead after hunters go missing in Alpine County

Devin Andrew Smith, 40, of Douglas Flat, Calif., and his nephew, Taylor Brent Dustin, 14, of Angels Camp, Calif., were camping in the Hermit Valley area about 22 miles south of Lake Tahoe and did not return from a deer hunt on Sunday, the Alpine County Sheriff's Office said.

With a variety of options from the One-Day Program to the Full-Time Competitive Program, the Foundation has something for all ages and levels of skiers and riders. What was supposed to be a routine re-vote to remedy an improperly -worded resolution turned into a reversal of an earlier decision during Tuesday’s South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. The council was scheduled to vote again on a resolution to allow City of Angels 2 medical marijuana dispensary to relocate to a building on Lake Tahoe Boulevard, a move the council voted 4-1 to approve at its meeting on June 5.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation has announced two new programs for the 2011 – 2012 winter season under the Freestyle umbrella. With a variety of options from the One-Day Program to the Full-Time Competitive Program, the Lake Tahoe foundation has something for all ages and levels of skiers and riders. Registration packets are available online, at the HSSF building, or by calling the HSSF administration office. Those who register and pay in full now will receive the early registration pricing; prices increase $100 on November 1, 2011.
