Talkin’ Turkey

It's bear hunting season and that's always controversial. This year, the debate is especially fierce in Lake Tahoe where animal activists are accusing the state of Nevada of trapping bears for hunting.

In the past five years, Nevada wildlife officials have caught and moved more than 20 bears out of the Lake Tahoe area into the desert. The Nevada Wildlife Department says it's got nothing to do with hunting, but its own data raises questions about the timing of the moves.

Purrfect timing for this question as it actually looks like we are going to get a winter this year! Here are some winter tips for all pets.

Keep your cats inside. During any time of the year, cats that are allowed to stray can become lost or stolen, injured or killed. They can also be exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife.

Dear Arthur,
Very good question! Just last week we were able to return a dog that had been stolen because it was micro chipped. We located the dog and because we were able to verify the legal owner via the microchip it made getting the dog back to his owner a much easier process.

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce has announced the nominees for their annual Blue Ribbon Awards with 80 nominations from the community. The program recognizes businesses and individuals who excel in working as one in an effort to improve the quality of life on the South Shore.

8:00AM update 10/15: Highway 89 remains closed in both directions from Fallen Leaf Lake Road to Emerald Bay due to the Emerald Fire which remains 80 percent contained this morning. Acreage burned is 210 acres.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There are 3 engines and 12 firefighters still on the scene.

Opening time for Hwy 89 is still unclear. CHP estimates Saturday afternoon and Caltrans estimates the road will be closed until Monday. This is to allow crews to clean up the fallen trees and other debris on, and near, the roadway.

This week's Pet of the Week is Hunter, a very sweet 5-year-old Cat. He is having a hard time of it at the shelter and is very scared.

Hunter would love to go home with someone who is loving and can give him the time he needs to love back.

Good news, the most recent Pets of the Week have found their forever homes! Both Jasmine the kitty and Thor the pup now have loving homes.

This week's pet of the week is Jasmine, a sweet six-year-old cat that loves cuddles and lots of love.

Poor Jasmine as been at the shelter for far too long and really needs her forever home!

For her tenth birthday, Arial Carreau-Schultz anticipated presents just as any young lady would, except she wasn't getting them for herself.

During her birthday party on September 30, the young South Lake Tahoe resident and Tahoe Valley Elementary student asked for gifts to take to the animals at the El Dorado County Animal Shelter. All 25 children that attended fulfilled her wishes, leaving behind a huge bounty that she'll take to the shelter this weekend.

Sunday, October 9 will be going to the dogs, and their humans, during the Animal Coalition of Tahoe’s 12th annual Mutt Strut Poker Run, a fun, family event where you can get a little exercise with your pooch, play poker, and maybe win some prizes is less than two weeks away!

The Mutt Strut will begin at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue in South Lake Tahoe, with registration from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Yosemite National Park is celebrating the gift of 400-acre Ackerson Meadow, the largest expansion of the park's boundaries since 1949. The meadow, a critical wetlands and meadow habitat on the park's western boundary, was purchased by the Trust for Public Land for $2.3 million and then donated to the park.

There are many cut female kittens at the shelter who are in need of adoption, but this week we've chosen "Zephyr" to be the Pet of the Week.

Some lessons in school can carry forward into life lessons teaching the student both the material new to their minds as well as accessing their innate skills. This year for the first time the fifth grade at Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School in Meyers, California had just such an opportunity.

Every year, countless dogs die in cars on summer days. Sometimes it’s not even that hot outside. Many times the window is cracked and the car is parked in the shade. The startling truth is that even in seemingly safe conditions the temperature inside your car can soar to life-threatening heights in just ten minutes – about the time it takes to run into the post office or the coffee shop or the pet store.

Even on a relatively mild day, your car can turn into an oven with frightening speed.

Brad D. Wlcek, of Lafayette, Calif., died Wednesday, May 18, 216. He was 27.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1989, in Derry, N.H. The family moved to Ridgefield where he spent his primary school years. In 2000, the family moved to Danville, Calif., where he completed his education graduating from San Ramon Valley High School class of 2007. Following graduation he attended the California State University, San Francisco.

"Hello, my name is Walter. I am around 7 months old and I am a good dog. I am house trained and would love to go to training classes to learn good manners. I walk nicely on my leash. I am a little shy to start with but warm up fast if you have a cookie. If you have another dog we should meet first to make sure we get along."

This week's Lake Tahoe Humane Society Pet of the Week is Troy. He is about three-years-old. Troy prefers to be an only cat, and has been living as an indoor-outdoor cat (though cats in Lake Tahoe being kept indoors is much safer for them). He ended up at Animal Services because he got out, and his owners never looked for him.

This week's pet of the week is Bear, a very handsome two-year-old German Shepard-Malamute mix. He is a lovely dog and is not happy being stuck in a cage at the shelter.
