Early morning fire at South Lake Tahoe home

5:30 p.m. update 6/27: A call went into South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue at 6:47 a.m. Monday, June 27 of a home on fire on Kubel Avenue. When personnel arrived, they saw flames from the roof and shed at the rear of the property.

A multi-agency response kept the fire to just one property with a home, shed, mobile home and a tree. Lake Valley Fire, Tahoe Douglas Fire responded as did a Cal Fire brush rig. There were also three engines, three medic units and two battalions. Liberty Utilities and Southwest Gas both responded to turn off services. The other agencies were released at 8:30 a.m, SLTFR at 10:00 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation due to the large amount of debris and belongings spread through the lot they have to go through. There is no estimate of property loss at this time.

"Training paid off because everyone knew their role and duty in fighting the fire," said Sallie Ross-Filgo, Administrative Assistant to the SLT Fire Chief. "Operations ran smoothly and the fire was contained to one property."

"Firefighters have expressed their sympathies to the owners of the lost dog," Ross-Filgo added.

There were two dogs in the home at the time of the fire, one was chained and didn't survive.

Niki Congero, Executive Director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society, told South Tahoe Now that the couple living in a mobile home in front of the property took the vehicle to her office Monday morning. They had a previous working relationship and sought Congero's assistance. She called the Red Cross for them, who responded to help with emergency housing.

Congero said the couple had planned to move the trailer located on the property to a new location on Monday.

12:45 p.m. update: The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but South Tahoe Now has learned a few more details.

A young couple living at the home were in the process of moving. Sunday night they were sleeping in a trailer in front of the house when the old trailer at the back of the home caught on fire.

Two dogs, Toby and Tyson, were in the back trailer when the fire ignited. Toby got out but Tyson did not make it.

The couple, whose names are not being released, went to the Lake Tahoe Humane Society this morning for assistance with their pets. Red Cross has been called to help them find a place to live.

More details will be released as they are investigated.

The cause of an early morning fire on Monday at a South Lake Tahoe home on Kubel Avenue is under investigation.

As of 11:00 a.m., few details are available as the investigator from South Tahoe Fire Rescue has not released any information. What is known is that nobody was home at the home when fire broke out in the back of the house. Apparently an out building and surrounding items were completely destroyed as was the rear of the home.

South Lake Tahoe Police officers on the scene were there to prevent anyone from entering the property, and fire rescue personnel were there to ensure the safety of the surrounding homes as the burned property was still smoldering.

Some sources said there was an animal inside the home at the time of the fire, but that has not been confirmed and SLTPD was unaware of an animal. They did have to restrain a man who drove up to the home that tried to get inside as it was burning.

This story will be updated as information becomes available.
